You’ve heard the saying, “Don’t cry over spilled milk” but a glass of red wine spilled on your carpet is reason enough for tears.  As are coffee spills, muddy dog paws, and markers.  Unfortunately, these accidents are just part of life and if you have carpet in your home, eventually you will find yourself viciously scrubbing a stain and saying a prayer.

Most stains can be removed with these steps:

1. Using warm water mix ¼ teaspoon of mild dishwashing liquid per 8 ounces of water.

2. Spray the solution on to an absorbent cloth.  This is where many people go wrong, they spray it directly onto the stain.  Use the cloth to dab (don’t rub, another common mistake). As the stain begins to dissolve move to clean sections of the cloth to continue the process until the stain is gone.

3. Once the stain is gone, use a fresh cloth and cold water to once again blot the area so that you are removing the detergent from carpet.

  1. Blot once again with a clean, dry towel to remove the moisture. If needed you can place a towel over it with a heavy book or pan on top.

    5. If the stain remains you can try a more targeted approach.

Looking to just freshen up your carpet?

Baking soda is a great substance to freshen up dingy carpet.  Sprinkle it on the trouble areas and softly work it into the carper with a soft brush.  Let it sit for about 30 minutes and then vacuum it up.
