You’re going on vacation and you have a lot to do before you leave and packing is just the beginning.  You also have to prepare for your pet sitter who is graciously coming to stay with your precious animals and keep an eye on your home.  If this is a new pet sitter it’s a good idea to have them come over to meet your pets before you leave.  In addition to pet care instructions you’ll also want to make some preparations for their stay.

Here are some things to think about:

1. Please clean your house well before they arrive. While you may be paying them, they are still doing you a monster favor by staying, and they shouldn’t have to live in your filth.  Before you leave make sure you put clean bedding on the room they will be sleeping, leave fresh towels, and make sure their room, the bathrooms, and the kitchen is clean for them.

2. Find out if there are any foods or drinks that they’d like to have in the house. I’m sure they will bring their own food for the most part, but it’s nice to have a few things for them.

3. Leave instructions for the remote control or TV. There is nothing more frustrating than when you are staying somewhere new and can’t figure out the darn TV.  Also leave any other instructions/information they might need such as how to work the thermostat, the WiFi password, or alarm system instructions.

4. Make sure they have emergency contact information in the event they can’t get a hold of you.  Vet names and numbers, as well as a close friend or relative who can help them out should an emergency occur.

5. Think of other ways you can make their life easier for example leave them the garage door opener. For example, I always leave a zip lock baggie of chlorine and write “Wednesday” on the baggie so they can just dump it in the hot tub without measuring. If you want them to water your indoor plants, put a sticky note on the plants that lets them know about how much water they should receive, not everyone knows the best plant care.
